Julien Hommes, Technical Producer at Broadcast Rental, thought he had seen it all. But the assignment given to the Hilversum-based company during the Eurovision Song Contest is a nextlevel challenge. And one that the company has met with enthusiasm.
“This year we have set up the remote Green Rooms”, Hommes explains. ‘We ensure that the countries that are not able to come to Rotterdam, or had to be quarantined, can still participate in the show. A remote solution makes it possible to visibly switch between the LED screens in Ahoy and live TV.
We had to come up with an innovative and flexible solution that allows us to anticipate as little as one hour in advance, as it were. Broadcast Rental is the link between all participating broadcasters, the host broadcaster, the mobile production units and the screens for the audience present. I cannot reveal too much, but together with our IT partner, Com1 Communication Solutions, with whom we have colaborated before on many successful productions, we have designed an innovative and extremely secure solution. We kept things as simple as possible, both at our end and that of the participating countries.
They have all been briefed about the 1-camera position with microphone, which is connected to our platform. As soon as the broadcast goes live, we make sure that all video and audio links work. We can communicate with the countries in advance and then transfer the signal, with less than 300 milliseconds delay to the screens and mobile production units.”
“It was known already that the Australian delegation would be addressing the Eurovision audience via our remote Green Room and platform. But now that the Icelandic delegation must quarantine as well, they, too, will be using the platform of Broadcast Rental and Com1 Communication Solutions. We are ready to get all 26 countries to attend virtually. Of course, that is what we would like best”, concludes Hommes with a smile. But the physical presence of all countries would be best for the show, of course. “Hopefully all Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted soon, but one thing is for sure; We will enjoy this solution in the future. It has unlimited possibilities. We are therefore looking forward to our next collaboration, where IP & Broadcast come together so beautifully”, adds Bas Sanders from Com1 Communication Solutions.
